In 1988, Powell-Peralta published an advertisement in both TWS and Thrasher titled "Artist Wanted." The purpose of this contest was to invite artists to compete for a position in the Powell-Peralta art department, located in Santa Barbara. Ultimately, the winner chosen for this opportunity was Sean Cliver. His selection was primarily attributed to the fact that his illustration style bore a close resemblance to that of the renowned artist VCJ.

Cliver made his debut with the design of the Barbee Ragdoll deck, which signified a shift away from the classic VCJ aesthetic. However, when it became necessary to refresh the design of the Caballero dragon graphic, Sean took inspiration from VCJ, emulating his iconic style. This particular graphic eventually earned the nickname "Ban This Dragon," owing to its prominent inclusion in the video that featured it—especially during a slow-motion sequence that left a lasting impression.

The "Ban This Dragon" graphic debuted in 1988 and was created by Sean Cliver. The deck it adorned had specific dimensions, measuring 9.265 inches in width and 32 inches in length. The wheelbase on the deck was set at 14.75 inches, with both the nose and tail measuring 6.5 inches each, making it a well-balanced design for skaters. Additionally, the truck hole pattern followed the New School Short 4 Truck Hole Pattern, which was widely adopted by skateboarders during that era.

The shape of the deck was designated as Shape 192, which complemented the K15 concave design, offering skaters enhanced control and performance. It is essential to note that this product was sold as a deck only, meaning that griptape was not included with the purchase.

By leveraging both vintage and contemporary styles, Cliver succeeded in revitalizing a classic while maintaining the quintessential elements that defined Powell-Peralta's artistry. His innovative approach bridged the gap between past and present, ensuring that the graphics not only resonated with long-time fans but also attracted a new generation of skateboard enthusiasts.

The "Ban This Dragon" design continues to be celebrated within the skateboarding community, reflecting the talent and creativity that Sean Cliver brought to the world of skate art. This graphic not only represents a notable chapter in Powell-Peralta's history but also exemplifies the enduring influence of skateboard art across cultures and generations.

Overall, the collaboration between Cliver and Powell-Peralta during this era marked a significant evolution in skateboard design, illustrating how art and skateboarding intersect in profound and lasting ways. Through Cliver's work, the spirit of the skate culture was captured, leaving an indelible mark and inspiring future artists in the field.
