In 1977, artist Vernon Courtlandt Johnson (VCJ) created two black-and-white posters to promote Bones wheels. The following year, he began a new project that would evolve into the iconic skateboarding skeleton image. To achieve realism, he acquired a life-sized skeleton from a medical supply store, which he named Rosie. After hours of positioning and rigging, Rosie was captured in a posture that resembled a skateboarding skeleton, providing the perfect model for Court's artwork.

By late 1978, Court completed his iconic piece, which became a Bones sticker and a graphic for t-shirts—the very first illustration produced under the Powell Peralta brand.
